Zomato Rebrands To Spice Up Its Original Recipe

What started as Foodiebay.com in 2008 (prior to getting rebranded in 2010), is now a household name that is the natural go-to service for any outdoor eating experience in India. Zomato that was originally co-founded by the trio of Pankaj Chaddah, Deepinder Goyal and Gunjan Patidar currently serves over 30 million monthly visitors globally and employs over 800 people. It is already present in 17 countries including Brazil, India, Turkey, Indonesia, New Zealand, the Philippines, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Qatar, Chile and Portugal and has been hitting the headlines for its ambitious expansion, aggressive acquisitions and numerous rounds of funding.

A major chunk of Zomato’s revenues currently come from advertising. The group has managed to raise around $53m through five rounds of funding from investors such as Sequoia Capital, which has also partnered with YouTube, and InfoEdge, which currently has a 50 per cent stake in Zomato.

Zomato began its international debut in Dubai, UAE in September 2012, and there has been no looking back since. The company made its first acquisition with New Zealand's MenuMania in July 2014. In August, it acquired Czech Republic’s restaurant guide Lunchtime.cz and Slovakia’s restaurant guide Obedovat.sk to access the respective markets. Last month, Zomato  acquired restaurant search service Gastronauci to enter Poland.

On Tuesday, the restaurant guide and discovery platform said it has started operations in Toronto, Canada and has earmarked $10 million for expansion in that market. With this bold move, Zomato is now going to lock horns with Yelp, a popular search application that dominates the market in Canada. Following this, the company is also in the midst of a rebranding process and has unveiled a brand new logo for what he calls, "a little experiment that started six years ago." 

The new logo that has been designed by Helvetic Brands, a design consultancy which is based in Lausanne, Switzerland replaces the old typography-based logo with a heart. This rebranding exercise attempts to capture the story, as Goyals puts it, of a millions of meals and experiences being with a vast global community of people. The story of 'people and food'. 

As it arms itself with ammuniation to compete with its global rivals, the journey for this service that aims to become the 'Google for food', has just about started.
