How can you make the skills you have work for you – how do you leverage your skills to give an extra boost to your career and slate yourself for success.

Understand your skills
Leveraging your skills and strengths means doing more of what you are good at and constantly improving to achieve greater results. This portrait will provide a firm starting ground to begin leveraging your skills that guide your future actions.

Utilize them effectively
It is understandable that you will not be spending the entirety of your time doing only the thing you are good at. You are required to do work that is connected to various other functions and objectives of the company. If you think your skills are underutilized, ask yourself if you can intentionally increase the fraction of skill-based work you want to do. Speak to your employer about giving you duties that you are sure of completing with success and utilize your core skills – for the company also wants their employees doing what they are best at.

Do not stagnate
With your present skills, it is easy to fall into a routine and be unaware that you may be stunting your growth. If you feel that you are stagnating at work, you should set new goals, identify areas where you can utilize and improve your skills. Understand if you need additional resources or help to hone your skills. By stagnating, you run the risk of becoming less relevant.

Think long-term
If your skills are not the best match with your long-term plans, you should evaluable how you can leverage your position and strengths to work for your future goals. Are your skills helping you reach those goals? If not, own up to this, and take control of the situation. Seek work that contributes to your professional development and long-term vision. Align the work you do towards what you want and have an exit plan if your current position makes you stagnant.

Be more comprehensive
In the present professional scenario, depending on one or two core skills is not sufficient guarantee for success. Always be aware of how your strengths are contributing to the larger success of your teammates and your company, how the skills other bring to the table contribute to your own development. Knowing how your core skills are connected to other skills makes you a comprehensive professional, and you get better at knowing how best to find the middle ground between your work and the work you do with you team members or with your clients.
